Introduction
Fertility is challlenged today - in Sweden and elsewhere. This is true for individuals and for couples, and also for societies.
The prevalence of current infertility is around 10% of couples world-wide, and in certain regions, notably sub-Saharan Africa, much higher. Indicators of fertility show negative trends in many countries: chlamydia and other sexually transmitted diseases are increasing, body weight also, the age of comen at childbirth likewise. Stress is common. These trends are strong!
In many societies today, the fertility rate is well below replacement level and populations are ageing rapidly. The demographic scenario is worrying.
So, fertility needs assistance: medical and also socio-economic assistance.
