The Swedish Society of Medicine 200 years!

  • is the scientific organisation of the Swedish medical profession. Its aim is to promote research, education and development in the healthcare sector
  • is responsible, with the support of its sections, for the advanced training of Swedish physicians
  • contributes more than SEK 20 million to medical research every year
  • arranges an Annual General Meeting for doctors
  • was founded in 1808 and is one of the oldest medical organisations in Europe

Organisation

  • the Society’s highest decision-making body is the Governing Assembly, which consists of representatives of sections the local medical societies
  • the Society’s activities are overseen by a Board consisting of seventeen members appointed by the Assembly
  • the Board is headed by a Chairman, assisted by a Deputy Chairman,Secretary and Treasurer.
  • the administrative side of the Society’s acitivities is run by a Secretariat managed by a Executive Director
  • the Swedish Society of Medicine has about 17 000 members. The members are divided into 66 sections. The sections make suggestions to the board regarding the submission of its views in the context of consultation processes, are responsible for the scientific programmes of the General meeting and arranges own scientific meetings

Membership is open to those who

  • have graduated in medicine in a Nordic country
  • have graduated in medicine elsewhere and are licensed to practise in Sweden
  • hold a doctorate at a medical faculty in Sweden
  • study at a faculty of medicine (student members)

Members of the Swedish Society of Medicine

  • can apply for grants from the Society’s research funds
  • can attend the Society’s scientific programme
  • can attend Berzelius Symposia and Physicians’ Days in Örebro at reduced cost
  • have free entry to the Annual General Meeting of the Swedish Society of Medicine

Activities

  • The Annual General Meeting of the Swedish Society of Medicine fulfils the dual function of providing doctors with CPD and informing about current medical research. This is done through symposia, lectures and scientific poster exhibitions.
  • Berzelius Symposia are international scientific meetings which highlight medical research in important topical fields.
  • Tuesday Meetings are held at the Society every Tuesday during term time. Scientific and current medical issues which range over the entire field of medicine are discussed.
  • Physicians’ Days is a CPD activity which has been held once a year since 1980 in association with the Örebro Society of Medicine. The aim is to focus on multiple aspects of a medical topic and pass on new research findings to doctors in clinical practice.

Unique premises for meetings and conferences
The premises at Klara Östra Kyrkogata 10 in Stockholm was built for the Swedish Society of Medicine and has served as a meeting place for doctors and members since 1906. Nowadays, the assembly rooms inside the building are not only used by representatives of the healthcare sector. Organisations, authorities, companies and individuals with no connections with medicine also hire the premises for conferences and receptions.

Assembly rooms
The Lecture Hall (200 pers), the Reading Room, the Library, and the Board Room (15 pers) are situated on the first floor. The third floor contains the Club Room (40 pers), Trafvenfelt (15 pers), Salongen (10 pers), and Grottan (6 pers).

The Jugend Restaurant is situated on the second floor and consists of the Dining Room (120 pers),
the Small Dining Room (30 pers), and the Acrélska Room (20 pers).
All rooms can be equipped for conferences/meetings. The floors can be reached by lift.
